As a basic precaution, it is good to make sure that the sump pump is detached from the mains power whenever you are doing any servicing. Make sure that the space around your sump pump is clear from various objects kept in the basement. Loose objects may hinder proper pump function. You also need to have clear access to the sump pump. Check visually the pit where water accumulates for any sort of debris. Dirt, leaves, and other unwanted objects could fall into the pit and block the pump's impeller. They might also block the float switch making the pump not trigger at raised water levels. Make certain that the tube immediately above the pump has a 3/16 inch to 3/8 inch hole. This is the air hole and is put there to make certain that an airlock does not occur in the discharge lines. Ensure that the float is positioned properly and that it isn't blocked by any walls or materials around the pump. Make sure that the float is set to the appropriate height. Check the drain line for any visible signs of holes, corrosion, or any other signs of deterioration. A drain line that is leaky will cause flooding by returning water into the basement. VI.Install a check valve in case it is not there. Once the motor is turned off, this is usually found in the sump pump's discharge line and is used to make sure that discharged water does not recede into the pit. VII.Plug the pump back into the mains to start an examination of the pump's function. If there isn't any so that the pump has something to use, make certain that you put water in the pit. Make certain that you have dropped in enough water so that the pump turns on automatically. When it should, make sure that there is a normal emptying of water and that the pump turns off. Just in case it doesn't' do so, the sensor could be faulty and you should probably call a professional plumber nearest you or consult the operator's manual for repair directions. Go to the outside and examine the discharge point. Proper discharge distance needs to be 5 feet to 10 feet from the foundation. Considering that the sump pumps have a life expectancy that is limited, make certain that your system is changed out every 8 to 10 years irrespective of whether it works or not. Possibilities are high that it is almost ready to stop working so it's just more desirable to change it prior to the next huge storm.
